Project: Small Space Native Garden

Location: James Island, SC

Project Notes:

  • Native shrubs and herbaceous wildflowers to provide nectar, seeds, fruits and habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds

    • Native groundcover (Frogfruit) serves as a flowering turf alternative

    • Joe Pye Weed cycles nutrients for the surrounding plants in the sandy soil

    • Root systems of the Brown-eyed Susan and Golden Alexanders help stabilize loose soil on the slope

    • Red Chokeberry provides edible fruits for jams, jellies, and compotes

  • Existing slope toward house was addressed through mindful plant selection

    • Lady Fern and Sweetpepper Bush for water-prone areas

  • Fire pit and paver patio to facilitate deeper connection to the outdoors
